SOZOPOL

Sozopol is situated on a picturesque peninsula in the southern part of the Bourgas Bay, about 35 km from Burgas and 416 km from Sofia. It is one of the oldest towns on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

Sozopol is divided into the Old and New Town, and the Sea Garden is located between them. The old part of the town is located on a small peninsula "Skamniy", which is connected by an artificial embankment and breakwater with St. Kirik island, 250 m northwest of Sozopol. The northern part of the peninsula ends with Skamni cape and the southern one - with Harmanite cape.

The newest part of the city, Harmanite neighborhood, is located along the Gulf Korenyata reaching Budjaka Peninsula. The southern boundary of the town outline Budjaka Peninsula and Kavatsi Bay. "St. Ivan" island and a small island of "St. Peter" are situated in the bay.

The area of the town is characterized by a highly indented coastline, sea terraces, numerous estuaries, medium and small beaches. Within the city the beaches are bigger - these are the beaches Central (North) and Harmanite. About a third part of the Harmanite beach is occupied by sand dunes. Peninsulas between the bays have a lot of underwater cliffs and surface rocks.

Sozopol's relief to the west is characterized by slopes dissected by deep mountains. To the southwest of the city is situated Bakarlaka Mount, 376 m.

The climate in Sozopol is among the humid subtropical and Mediterranean climate, with warm, but windy winters (average temperature in January is + 6°C) and long, hot summers (average temperature in July is + 27°C).

There are several protected areas around Sozopol, for the conservation of endangered animal and plant species.

The old town of Sozopol is preferred for walks because of the small streets and old houses. In the new part of the city are located many hotels and restaurants.

The accommodation options in Sozopol are varied - luxury hotels, small family hotels, guest houses, bungalows. In the immediate vicinity to the town several campings are located as "Garden", "Zlatna Ribka", "Kavatsi", "Veselie" and "Smokinya".

There are many monuments, artistic performances and events, restaurants and entertainment venues, port services, yacht clubs and other opportunities for sea sports and recreation in Sozopol.

Sozopol attracts many Bulgarian and foreign tourists with its cultural and historical past, its preserved architecture from the XVIII and XIX century and the beautiful atmosphere of the Old Town, beaches and campings, as well as the annual Festival of Arts "Apolonia".

    Sozopol has 2 kindergartens and one elementary school. At the community center "Vasil Levski" in Sozopol there are nine art groups: children and women dance and theater group, School of Fine Arts, School of modern and classical ballet, folk group, language school.

    Medical center "Sveti Zosim" and Center for Emergency Medical Care provide medical service in Sozopol. Specialized healthcare is provided by hospitals in Burgas.
  • RESTAURANTS AND BARS
    Sozopol is full of traditional restaurants, small taverns and cafes situated along the coast, in the old and new parts of the town. There are pizzerias, cafeterias, bars as well as casinos. Some interesting restaurants are "Neptune", "Windmill", "Taverna Athena", "Sozopol Tavern", "Xantana", "Fishing vessel Druzhba", "Olympus", "Orpheus", "Lily". Some of them are built in reconstructed old houses. There are many grocery stores and good markets. Fresh fish can be bought directly from fishermen at the harbor.

    • Old Sozopol Architectural and Archaeological Reserve The old town of Sozopol was declared a museum-reserve in 1974. The reserve includes more than 180 buildings from the middle of the XVIII and beginning of XIX century. The houses in the old city were built of stone and wood and belong to the so-called Black Sea architectural style houses. Among the best known are: House Alexander Mutafov, House of Marieta Stefanova, House of Todor Zagorov, House of Kreanoolu, House of Kurtidi and others. • Archaeological Museum in Sozopol is part of the 100 National Tourist Sites. • Architectural complex "Southern Fortress Wall and Tower" The building of the museum complex is located in the southeastern area of the peninsula Skamniy starting east of the Marine Park Street "South panoramic alley" immediately above the Black Sea. • Art Gallery The gallery was established in 1991. It is located in the old school building. The gallery has about 287 paintings (mostly paintings and graphics) and about 40 sculptures by Bulgarian and foreign authors. • Windmill Sozopol • Thracian fortress near Copper Ridge (Medni rid) At a secluded mountain ridge around Sozopol. In XIII-XII c. BC. Thracians were built walls at high peaks of the ridge. Among the most interesting ones are the strongholds constructed at Mount Atia, Peak Bakarlaka, Lobodovo kale and The small Kale hills. • Thracian burial mounds At heights of Copper Ridge (Medni rid) and the nearby coastal hills there are many mounds - traces of the burial mounds of the Thracians. In the past they have been around 1500, today there are less. • Ancient necropolis Among the most famous necropolis of the ancient town Apollonia Pontica is located in the Sea Garden and the areas of Budzhaka, Harmanite and Kalfata. • Fortress walls VI-XIV century Medieval Sozopol is surrounded by fortified walls and towers built around 511 years at the time of Emperor Anastasius. The preserved fragments of the fortress wall reach a height of 3-4 meters. Since 2003, the fortress walls were reconstructed, preserved and promoted.
  • CULTURAL LIFE AND ENTERTAINMENT
    CHURCHES AND MONASTERIES Sozopol has more than 20 Orthodox churches and 5 monasteries. Remains of the St. Ivan monastery complex dating from the X-XII c are still preserved, as are the Medieval basilica in the city center and part of the Holy Apostles Monastery on Skamniy Point in the northeastern part of the Old Town. Active churches, interesting to consider, are the ancient churches of "St. Zosim", 1857 and "St. Mary", 1828. The "St. Mary" church is the largest one in Sozopol. It was declared a cultural monument under UNESCO protection. Other interesting churches are the "Saints Cyril and Methodius", 1889; The church "St. Mary Kaleosa", "St. John the Baptist". EVENTS The biggest events in Sozopol are The Apollonia Festival (September 1-10) and the July Celebration (June 30-July 1). Each year, from 01 to 10 September, Sozopol hosts big International Festival of Arts - Apollonia, which attracts artists from Bulgaria and abroad. The festival program is rich in events and include international theater performances, jazz concerts, fashion shows, chamber music, book premieres, etc. July Morning is held on 30 June – 01 July and July 17 is the holiday of Sozopol. During the summer season in Sozopol are held events and festivals associated with theater, puppets, art, photography, poetry, music.
  • TOURISM
    Sozopol has two beaches – the Central and Harmanite. Near Sozopol there are several nice beaches with campgrounds such as "Goldfish", "Kavatsite", "Garden", "Veselie" and "Smokinya" (Fig). Over Sozopol is located Mount Bakarlaka, 376 m. In this area on the hills remains of an ancient Thracian fortress can be found. On the mountain hills of Copper Ridge (Medni rid), numerous Thracian burial mounds and ancient cemeteries can be seen in the areas "Harmani" and "Budjaka". Part of the coast of Sozopol is rocky in the south, where many secluded caves are located. 20 km south of the town is Ropotamo River with two natural reserves - Water Lily and Velyov Vir. Here passes Via Pontica - the way of migrating birds. Every year in late summer thousands of storks, pelicans and over 30 species of birds can be observed. In the area around the town there are countless places for fishing. Individual tours for fishing can be organized. It can be fished from a boat, on the rocky shore or underwater, sea or freshwater fish. On the beaches you can practice different sports - boating and jet, surfing, beach volleyball, etc. The conditions for windsurfing near Sozopol are very good. The best places for surfers are at the campgrounds of Chenomorets, Garden and Goldfish. There are surf schools and surf hire is offered. All water sports you can practice on individual programs. National regattas are conducted annually at the bay of Sozopol. Another attraction near Sozopol is the island St. Ivan, which is located about 2 km north of the old town. This is the biggest island in the Bulgarian Black Sea. On the island was built sonar lighthouse, which together with the lighthouse on Cape Emine shows the path of the vessels to the Burgas Bay. In ancient times, the island was a hideout of pirates, and later there was a monastery called the Holy Virgin, which was later renamed into St. Ivan Prodromos. In the waters around the island a unique underwater phenomenon known as Stone Forest can be seen. The port of Sozopol offers yacht and boat trips to nearby localities.
