BALCHIK

Balchik is a small picturesque Black sea town known for its unique Botanical garden, Architectural park complex - the Palace and Yacht port.

Balchik is a small picturesque town situated on a hilly terrain on the Black Sea coast in the Northeastern part of Bulgaria. Near Balchik are located Albena resort (13 km), the village of Kranevo (15 km), the town of Kavarna (18 km), Golden Sands Resort (27 km), Varna (29 km).
In the area of Balchik are located nature landmarks such as Cape Kaliakra, Kamen Bryag and Stone Forest.

Balchik is an administrative and economic center of the municipality. There are primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, several hospitals and medical cabinets in the town.

The coastline near Balchik is 4 km long.
The town is located in an area with a temperate continental climate, the average temperature in July is 22°C and the sea temperature in summer reaches 24°C.

In Balchik there are curative mineral springs with temperatures up to 31°C.

Balchik is one of the oldest European cities. Created in the middle of the V² c. BC more than 2600 years ago by Greek colonists on the ruins of a much earlier settlement.
The town was named after the Greek god of wine and joy Dionysus - Dionysopolis.

In Balchik there are a variety of entertainment options - numerous restaurants, shops, interesting natural, historical and architectural attractions - the Botanical Garden, Architectural park complex - the Palace, Ethnographic Museum, Art Gallery, City History Museum.

Apart from the big restaurants in the downtown and hotels, there are many small private restaurants, coastal stalls offering seafood, pizzas, grocer's shops, etc.

4 km east of the town is located "Tuzlata" area, known for its curative mud. There you can find a spa center, a large recreation complex, camping sites with bungalows and villas.

Yacht port of Balchik allows for berthing 60 yachts. The port of Balchik is used for medium sized passenger and trade vessels.
Yacht tourism and fishing are developed in Balchik. Picnics, fishing and bathing in the sea battle with a pirate ship, romantic cruises and more can be organized in Balchik.

    The medical services in the municipality are well developed in network of hospitals.   • SIGHTSEEING

    Old houses and streets have preserved the ancient atmosphere of Balchik. It is interesting to walk along and observe the Tatar Quarter with the pebbled streets and the houses made of stone and adobe. Among the landmarks of the city are the Ethnographic Museum, the old Turkish Mosque, "St. Nicholas" church, etc.

    The symbols of the city are the Palace and the Botanical garden - the biggest on the Balkan Peninsula and the second largest in the world.

    The old palace was built in 1924-1931 by the request of the Romanian queen Maria. The authors of the construction design are Italian architects.

    Botanical Garden
    University Botanical Garden - Balchik was founded in 1955 on the territory of the former summer residence of Romanian Queen Maria.

    The total area of the garden is 65 acres, where can be seen collections of plant species from around the world. Impressive is the collection of large cacti area of 1 ha. There are over 2000 plant species belonging to 85 families and 800 genera.

    MUSEUMS

    Historical Museum of Balchik
    In the city historical museum are preserved artifacts from the emergence of the city in the VI century BC. The exhibition includes finds from ceramics and glass, epigraphic monuments, a collection of coins, etc. The dynamic socio-political and economic life of Balchik after the Liberation in 1878 is presented by documents and photographs.

    Ethnographic Museum
    The building of the Ethnographic Museum is situated opposite to the building of the Historical Museum. The museum is located in a house from the Revival Period, which was an ownership of a tradesperson from Balchik. Domestic articles, jewels and traditional clothes are presented here. Traditional costumes from Dobrudzha and Kotel can be seen on the second floor of the museum, as well as interesting tools, such as carding machines (devices for wool combing), distaff, looms, etc.

    The Revival Complex
    The Revival complex includes Mutual School and the church "St. Nicholas ". The school building features an interior of class and teaching rooms from the mid-nineteenth century. Interesting are the original models of cold and firearms and other exhibits from the Renaissance.

    Patron of the church "St. Nicholas" is the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. The church was built in the mid-nineteenth century. A permanent exhibition "Renaissance icons from Dobrudzha" is is arranged there.

    GALLERIES

    The Art gallery in Balchik is an interesting place. After the returning of South Dobdudzha to Bulgaria in 1940 the gallery was closed, and the exponents were taken to Romania. Restoration of the gallery began in the 1960s. Nowadays, works of art created by multiple Bulgarian authors are exhibited on an area of 800 sq. m. There is a foreign art hall and other 2 halls which accommodate temporary exhibitions on its first floor. A central place in the foyer of the second floor is occupied by the statue of God Dionysus. Here is the permanent exposition of the gallery. There are more than 1500 works of art made by Bulgarian and foreign authors in the gallery fund.

    CHURCHES AND MONASTERIES

    • Church "St. Nikolai"
    Temple church "St. Nikolai" is a large three-nave church made of white stone. It was built in 1848, but later destroyed by the Greeks. In 1866 the church was rebuilt.

    • The palace chapel "Virgin Mary"
    The complex was built in 1873. Visitors can see old houses and nice cobblestone streets.

    • The Temple of Kibela was found in 2007. According to archaeologists it dates back to about 280 – 260 year BC. 27 preserved inscriptions were found in the remains of the temple, and almost all images are of the Goddess Kibela.

    EVENTS

    Balchik is a center of many cultural events. Annually are held many festivals, among which are:
    - May 24 - Celebration of Balchik;
    - Children's festival "Smiles of the Sea";
    - Balfest - international festival for documentary and reportage cinema;
    - Cultural festivals in September;
    - Festival of Science Fiction;
    - Process-festival space. Depending on the theme many of the festival's works are made on the spot;
    - Children's Festival "Horo of pearls";
    - International Student Film Festival;
    - Photo-fest "Balchik - ancient and modern."

  • TOURISM

    The area of Touzlata is located 4 km east of Balchik and is well known for its curing mud. A spa-centre was built there beside the two lakes. The lake bottom is covered with black hydrogen sulphide peloid. A large recreational complex, a lot of villas, bungalows and a camping site are built here.

    There is a mineral spring with water temperature of 31°C in Balchik.

    Near Balchik are located two big camping sites - Sandrino Camping and Belia Bryag Camping. They offer various opportunities for rest and water sports, clubs, bars, bungalows, restaurants and stalls.

    The sea resort of Albena is situated in close proximity to Balchik. The two destinations are connected by a sea shore alley called Dambata. It begins from the yacht port, passes by the Palace and reaches Albena, as its total length is 7300 meters.

    The Monastery Ak Yazala Baba – St. Atanas is situated at a distance of 16 km from Balchik, near the village of Obrochishte. The local people call it the Tekke (a dervish monastery). It was built in the 16th c., but it was visited by Christians and Muslims as well. Christians believe that there was a monastery here once, which was turned by the Muslims into a dervish sanctuary, and St. Atanasius was murdered by the Ottomans while he was defending his faith. Nowadays visitors can see two buildings – the türbe (tomb), in the middle of which is the grave of Akyazala Baba, and the imaret – the place where the monks were performing their rituals and had accommodated travelers.

    There are 3 modern golf courses in close proximity to Balchik.

    15 km south-west of Balchik is the village of Obrochishte with a well-preserved fortress dating back to the early Ottoman rule.

    There are also other interesting places in the region – the village of Kranevo, the rock capital of Bulgaria – town of Kavarna, the reservation of the Kaliakra fortress.
