“Villa Domitiana II”, lying between the two original properties of the Agnelli-Rattazzi family, was purchased in 2004 by the Rattazzi brothers and entirely renovated in 2004/2005 by their mother Suni Agnelli.
The property lies within the Domitiana Positio archaeological compound, which consists of the most important visible remains of a Roman Imperial Villa Maritima existing on the coast of Tuscany.
The Villa was built by the Domitii Ahenobarbi family in the first part of the 1st century B.C. The latest descendant of this family was Emperor Nero (whose real name was Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus). The Domitii Ahenobarbi were prominent patricians, consuls and bankers (argentarii) and owned most of the area which, as a result, took its ‘current name from them: Monte Argentario.
In the second century A.D., the property was transferred to another member of a very prominent Imperial Family, Matidia- the niece of Emperor Trajan and the mother in law of Emperor Hadrian. Prior to assuming its’ current denomination, the area was actually known as “Insula Matidiae”.
Within the “Villa Domitiana II” confines lies the longest stretch of Roman Wall of the whole compound, astonishing villa to the sea. On the waterfront, there are very visible the remains of the storage facilities (horrea), probably used for fishes and farm products. Also very visible in this area, underwater, are the docking facilities built by the Romans.
The Eastern Property, a adjacent to “Villa Domitiana II”, contains the most interesting remains of the imperial residential complex (Mosaic floors, a cryptoporticus or gallery and the fisheries at sea).
